John Jagerson here. The one positive aspect of a bear market is that valuations are low. As long as traders can focus on the underlying fundamentals and maintain a long-term view, bargains during a bear market can be very profitable. Luongo: The Queen Is Dead, But Is The UK? Authored by Tom Luongo via Gold, Goats, ''n Guns blog, I wrote a scathing piece on new UK Prime Minster Liz Truss the other day because I had to. Truss, I believe, is everything I said she is. Sadly, she was also the best choice among the Tories to potentially carry Brexit to its real fruition. Queen Elizabeth II finally gave up this mortal coil and say what you want about the British Crown and its perfidiousness throughout the centuries, Elizabeth was, I believe, something different. I’m no royalist, or even a fan of the Brits at the geopolitical level. I’ve spit enough fire and brimstone at them for their provincial attitudes towards all of their former colonies to level mountains. The British aristocracy is as corrupt and enabling of the corrupt as any group of people in human history. And many of the people they have enabled have no intention of giving up that power. Hence, the mess we see in Europe and the UK. For all of the complaints I level at our own government being in the pay and service of foreign actors, I more than recognize the UK is dealing with the same problem.

Wall Street is searching for solid stocks to buy that could shield long-term portfolios from market volatility ahead of the anticipated interest rate hikes. While inflation may have peaked in July, it remains well above the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) 2% target. So far in 2022, the central bank has already raised its overnight lending rate by 2.25%. Investors will most likely see further interest rate hikes through the rest of the year in the Fed’s bid to bring down inflation. Chairman Jerome Powell recently remarked that the Fed aims to utilize its policymaking “tools forcefully to bring demand and supply into better balance.” Thus, the Fed is committed to a more contractionary monetary policy in the months ahead. Meanwhile, August ended on a down note, reversing some of the gains seen earlier in the summer. As a result, the benchmark S&P 500 index is currently down 17% year-to-date (YTD), compared with the nearly 25% decline in the Nasdaq 100 index. Against this backdrop, it’s no surprise that investors are increasingly focused on stable stocks to buy in sectors that may outperform the broader market.

Brokerage start-ups such as Robinhood, M1 Finance and SoFi are tiny compared with the trillions of dollars in brokerage assets at the likes of Schwab and Fidelity. But they’ve already made a big dent in the way things work: These newcomers pioneered commission-free stock trading and fractional-share purchases, and now those services are standard fare at the big online brokers. The smaller firms don’t qualify for our annual online broker review because they don’t offer mutual fund or bond trading. But we put five firms—Betterment, M1 Finance, moomoo, Robinhood and SoFi—through the paces of a trimmer survey this year. For the record, Webull didn’t respond to our invitations; tastyworks declined. The overall winner is Robinhood. It dominated two key categories, mobile and investment choices. SoFi also scored well, posting above-average scores in all but one category, tools and research. M1 Finance finished third with high marks in tools and research, user experience, and investment choices.
It is understandable if you are paying less attention to your brokerage account these days, given the current market malaise. World Economic Forum Suggests There Are "Solid, Rational" Reasons To Microchip Kids Authored by Paul Joseph Watson via Summit News, Not doing their Bond villain reputation status any favors, the World Economic Forum published an article suggesting it would be a “solid, rational” move for children to be implanted with microchips. Yes, really. The idea is promoted in a blog post on the Davos elite’s website which discusses the future of augmented reality and an “augmented society.” “As scary as chip implants may sound, they form part of a natural evolution that wearables once underwent. Hearing aids or glasses no longer carry a stigma,” the article argues, perhaps forgetting that glasses and hearing aids aren’t embedded inside the body, nor can they be controlled by outside forces. “They are accessories and are even considered a fashion item. Likewise, implants will evolve into a commodity,” writes scientist Kathleen Philips, suggesting that mainstream culture and influencers will be tapped to promote implantable chips as a trendy status symbol.
Von Greyerz: An Autumn Of Epic Asset Collapses & Higher Inflation… Means Poverty & Social Unrest Authored by Egon Von Greyerz via GoldSwitzerland.com, The world economy and especially the political and economic situation today consists of a potpourri of lethal ingredients which will have dire consequences... Let’s look at what this deadly potion consists of: Debts at levels that can never be repaid – sovereign, corporate & private Epic global bubbles in stocks, bonds & property – all about to collapse Major geopolitical conflicts with no desire for peace – major wars likely Energy imbalances and shortages, most self-inflicted Food shortages leading to major famine and civil unrest Inflation, leading to hyperinflation & global poverty Political and economic corruption in US, Europe and most countries No country will afford social security, medical or pension payments So what are governments around the world doing to solve these problems? Nothing of course. The only thing they know is to print more money.
You may have heard about direct indexing recently. It isn’t new, but it may feel that way given all the attention and interest it is generating these days. The elimination of trading commissions has been a major factor in making direct indexing significantly more accessible. A strategy that was once relevant only to very wealthy investors is now something that almost any investor can consider. But is it right for you? To help answer that, I put together a primer covering some of the basics – what direct indexing is and how it works, the primary benefits it is designed to offer, and some things to consider if you’re curious about learning more. What is direct indexing? It’s pretty simple, really. Direct indexing – which we call “personalized indexing” at Schwab – means you own the stocks (or a subset of stocks) that make up an index directly. This differs from traditional index mutual fund and ETF investing where you own shares in the fund (alongside many other shareholders), but it’s the fund that owns the stocks.
As the saying goes, past is not prologue. That simply means that what happened in the past doesn’t fully predict what will occur in the future. But when it comes to the stock market, there’s strong data to suggest that when the Fed hikes interest rates, certain sectors fare much better than others. Therefore, investors would be wise to focus on those sectors when picking stocks to buy. The data, compiled by Charles Schwab , indicates that six sectors , including communication services, energy, financials, healthcare, information technology, and utilities, outperform the stock market following rate hikes. So one strategy would simply be to find strong performers from each of those sectors and buy the shares of those stocks. I’ll identify such stocks in this column. CTRA Coterra Energy $30.20 MSFT Microsoft $290.50 V Visa $214.90 MA Mastercard $357.07 JNJ Johnson & Johnson $166.30 TMUS T-Mobile US $146.23 DUK Duke Energy $112.35 Coterra Energy (CTRA) Source: zhengzaishuru / Shutterstock.

The Federal Reserve has engaged in a significant campaign to try to rein in inflation . The Fed has made one 25-basis-point hike , one 50-basis-point hike and two 75-basis-point hikes already. The latter hike, in May, was the largest hike since 1994 . Analysts now expect we may end the year near 3%. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has made it clear that the current inflation rate is unacceptable, and that the Central Bank will continue taking aggressive measures to stamp it out. This accelerated rate-hiking campaign has been a major contributor to the stock market’s uneven performance over the past six months. Let’s zoom out though: What do higher interest rates mean for stocks and what can investors do to prepare themselves? First, The Bad News Overall, the effect of rising interest rates is a negative one for the stock market. It’s an old adage that traders shouldn’t fight the Fed, after all.
