SANIBEL ISLAND, Fla. (AP) — When Hurricane Ian struck Florida’s Gulf Coast, it washed out the bottom level of David Muench’s home on the barrier island of Sanibel along with several cars, a Harley-Davidson and a boat. His parents’ house was among those destroyed by the storm that killed at least two people there, and the lone bridge to the crescent-shaped island collapsed, cutting off access by car to the mainland for its 6,300 residents. Hurricane Ian underscores the vulnerability of the nation’s barrier islands and the increasing costs of people living on the thin strips of land that parallel the coast. As hurricanes become more destructive , experts question whether such exposed communities can keep rebuilding in the face of climate change. “This is a Hurricane Katrina-scale event, where you’re having to rebuild everything, including the infrastructure,” said Jesse M. Keenan, a real estate professor at Tulane University’s School of Architecture. “We can’t build back everything to what it was — we can’t afford that.” Ian slammed into southwest Florida as a Category 4 hurricane Wednesday with among the highest windspeeds in U.S. history — in nearly the same spot where Hurricane Charley, also a Category 4, caused major damage in 2004.

Motorcyclist In Florida Killed After Being Hit From Behind In Tesla If the NHTSA is investigating Tesla''s Autopilot use around motorcycles, as we reported it was just days ago , they may want to hurry up. That''s because yet another motorcyclist has died as a result of a an accident with a Tesla, this time in Boca Raton, Florida. It is unclear whether or not Autopilot was involved in the accident. 51 year old biker Ingrid Eva Noon was traveling west on Southwest 18th Street on her Kawasaki Vulcan, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel , when, shortly after 2AM, a driver in a Tesla "struck her motorcycle from behind". The Sheriff''s office did confirm that the driver "had drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of the crash" and it isn''t yet clear whether or not the vehicle was on Autopilot at the time of the accident. An investigation is ongoing. However, the incident is eeriliy similar to other incidents the NHTSA is already investigating wherein Teslas on Autopilot potentially fail to recognize motorcycles in front of them .

NHTSA Investigating Potential Tesla Autopilot Crashes That Left Two Motorcyclists Dead In the midst of an already ongoing investigation into Tesla''s Autopilot and Full-Self Driving claims, the NHTSA is now investigating two new accidents involving Teslas that took place over the last month. The Tesla''s were "apparently running on Autopilot", according to APs coverage of the story . The accidents wound up killing 2 motorcyclists, the report says. The NHTSA is now looking at whether or not Tesla vehicle automation stops the vehicles for motorcycles. Both accidents were similar in nature: the NHTSA said it "sent investigation teams to two crashes last month in which Teslas collided with motorcycles on freeways in the darkness". In both instances, the motorcyclists were killed. The agency now has suspicions "that Tesla’s partially automated driver-assist system was in use" during both accidents. The first accident was at 4:47am, July 7 on State Route 91, on a freeway in Riverside, California, the report says.

NEW YORK : Wall Street stocks rallied again yesterday (July 28), shrugging off a weak US gross domestic product (GDP) report that deepened recession talk but generated hopes among investors that the economic slowdown means the Federal Reserve will moderate its aggressive interest rate hikes. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished 1.0% higher at 32,529.63. The broad-based S&P 500 climbed 1.2% to 4,072.43, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index tacked on 1.1% to 12,162.59. Stocks fell soon after the second-quarter data were released, showing US GDP declined at an annual rate of 0.9%, following an even bigger drop in the first quarter. But markets pivoted later in the morning, betting that clear signs of economic weakness would prompt the Fed to ease off on steep increases in borrowing costs. The US central bank on Wednesday announced its second straight 75 basis point increase, and signalled it is prepared to do more. “The real catalyst … is a belief that bad news (earnings disappointments and weak data) is good news (fewer rate hikes from the Fed),” Briefing.com said in an analysis.
