John Jagerson here. The one positive aspect of a bear market is that valuations are low. As long as traders can focus on the underlying fundamentals and maintain a long-term view, bargains during a bear market can be very profitable. In my and Wade’s view, the best stocks right now are positioned to take advantage of the economy’s problems, namely inflation, rising interest rates, and slowing growth. Or at least the best stocks are those that are most insulated from the problems in the economy. With that, I’d like to give you a list of our top stocks for the rest of this year – and into 2023… It’s Time: Get Prepared for the Incoming Market Shock Inflation and a bear market are nothing compared to what’s around the corner, and millions are about to be blindsided. The collection and processing of trash can be an extremely profitable business. Waste Management (NYSE: WM) and Republic Services (NYSE: RSG) have dominated the space for decades now, as both names, along with municipalities, have captured a combined market share of 75% in the United States. Due to their positive, recession-resilient traits, however, both companies have attracted quite elevated multiples, which languish their investment case. For this reason, I am neutral on both names. Brokerage start-ups such as Robinhood, M1 Finance and SoFi are tiny compared with the trillions of dollars in brokerage assets at the likes of Schwab and Fidelity. But they’ve already made a big dent in the way things work: These newcomers pioneered commission-free stock trading and fractional-share purchases, and now those services are standard fare at the big online brokers. The smaller firms don’t qualify for our annual online broker review because they don’t offer mutual fund or bond trading. But we put five firms—Betterment, M1 Finance, moomoo, Robinhood and SoFi—through the paces of a trimmer survey this year. For the record, Webull didn’t respond to our invitations; tastyworks declined. The overall winner is Robinhood. It dominated two key categories, mobile and investment choices. SoFi also scored well, posting above-average scores in all but one category, tools and research. M1 Finance finished third with high marks in tools and research, user experience, and investment choices.

It is understandable if you are paying less attention to your brokerage account these days, given the current market malaise. World Economic Forum Suggests There Are "Solid, Rational" Reasons To Microchip Kids Authored by Paul Joseph Watson via Summit News, Not doing their Bond villain reputation status any favors, the World Economic Forum published an article suggesting it would be a “solid, rational” move for children to be implanted with microchips. Yes, really. The idea is promoted in a blog post on the Davos elite’s website which discusses the future of augmented reality and an “augmented society.” “As scary as chip implants may sound, they form part of a natural evolution that wearables once underwent. Hearing aids or glasses no longer carry a stigma,” the article argues, perhaps forgetting that glasses and hearing aids aren’t embedded inside the body, nor can they be controlled by outside forces. “They are accessories and are even considered a fashion item. Likewise, implants will evolve into a commodity,” writes scientist Kathleen Philips, suggesting that mainstream culture and influencers will be tapped to promote implantable chips as a trendy status symbol.

You may have heard about direct indexing recently. It isn’t new, but it may feel that way given all the attention and interest it is generating these days. The elimination of trading commissions has been a major factor in making direct indexing significantly more accessible. A strategy that was once relevant only to very wealthy investors is now something that almost any investor can consider. But is it right for you? To help answer that, I put together a primer covering some of the basics – what direct indexing is and how it works, the primary benefits it is designed to offer, and some things to consider if you’re curious about learning more. What is direct indexing? It’s pretty simple, really. Direct indexing – which we call “personalized indexing” at Schwab – means you own the stocks (or a subset of stocks) that make up an index directly. This differs from traditional index mutual fund and ETF investing where you own shares in the fund (alongside many other shareholders), but it’s the fund that owns the stocks.

As the saying goes, past is not prologue. That simply means that what happened in the past doesn’t fully predict what will occur in the future. But when it comes to the stock market, there’s strong data to suggest that when the Fed hikes interest rates, certain sectors fare much better than others. Therefore, investors would be wise to focus on those sectors when picking stocks to buy. The data, compiled by Charles Schwab , indicates that six sectors , including communication services, energy, financials, healthcare, information technology, and utilities, outperform the stock market following rate hikes. So one strategy would simply be to find strong performers from each of those sectors and buy the shares of those stocks. I’ll identify such stocks in this column. This is a question that many people ask themselves in quiet moments but would never have enough nerve to say out loud. SEE MORE 5 Generational Money Taboos That Must Die What does “being rich” mean? As it turns out, the definition seems to be changing. What’s the Dollar Figure for Being Rich? How much money do you need to be considered rich? Well, according to Schwab’s 2021 Modern Wealth Survey , Americans believe it takes a net worth of $1.9 million to qualify a person as being wealthy. (Net worth is the sum of your assets less your liabilities.) To get a clearer picture of where you rank, check out this wealth report card: People with the top 1% of net worth in the U.S. in 2022 had $10,815,000 in net worth. The top 2% had a net worth of $2,472,000. The top 5% had $1,030,000 and the top 50% had $522,210. The top 10% had a net worth of $854,900. If you still want to picture where you fit, consider that there are 6.7 million people with a net worth between $1 million and $5 million. A Different Measure of Wealth: The American Dream This was so imbedded into the American psyche that the dictionary deems it to be a “noun phrase.” The definition is: “A happy way of living that is thought of by many Americans as something that can be achieved by anyone in the U.S. especially by working hard and becoming successful.” Successful was not defined, but the American Dream also typically includes the idea of owning your own home, being married and having 2.3 children.
