(Thursday Market Open) It’s the first day of September and already the month appears to be living up to its bad reputation as equity index futures point to a lower open. Potential Market Movers As I mentioned in my September Outlook , the month of September has historically been the worst month on average for the S&P 500® index (SPX) and the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DJI). While there’s no guarantee this will be the case by the end of September, so far, the month is not off to a good start. One reason is that China announced that it is locking down more than 21 million residents in the city of Chengdu, which reported 700 new cases of COVID-19. As the northern hemisphere moves into winter months, global cases are likely to rise. This means that lockdown could be an ongoing problem for China’s economy and the global supply chain as China sticks to its zero-COVID policy. Chinese stocks were lower on the news with Shanghai composite down 0.54% and the Heng Seng tumbling 1.79%. China’s COVID-19 risk is likely contributing to falling oil prices because lockdowns lead to lower demand.

Markets traded mostly sideways yesterday as the US dollar’s advance was stymied and US yields pushed back slightly lower. China continues to allow its currency to trade toward the lows for the cycle versus the US dollar as the 7.00 area nears in USDCNH. The euro bobbed back up toward parity versus the US dollar yesterday as natural gas prices fell even as Russia shuts the key Nord Stream pipeline down for a purported few days of maintenance. What is our trading focus? Nasdaq 100 (USNAS100.I) and S&P 500 (US500.I) US equities stabilised yesterday following that knee-jerk reaction on Friday to the Jackson Hole presentations with S&P 500 futures touching and bouncing off the 50-day moving average closing above the critical 4,000 level. S&P 500 futures are trading around the 4,044 level this morning sandwiched between the 100-day moving average above this level and the 50-day moving average below suggesting a bigger move is shaping up in either direction. The next big shift in sentiment will be when we get the US August CPI print on 13 September as that is the key data point to shape expectations from current levels.

Americans Will Never Forget The Historic Economic Collapse During Joe Biden''s Presidency Authored by Michael Snyder via TheMostImportantNews.com, We have faced a lot of significant challenges in modern American history, but nobody will ever forget the economic horror that is breaking loose during Joe Biden’s time in the White House. For years, we were warned that the policies that our leaders were pursuing would destroy the value of our currency and unleash rampant inflation. Now it has happened. For years, we were warned of a looming global energy crisis that would inevitably hit us. Now it is here. But what we have been through already is just the beginning. The shortages that we are experiencing now will get worse. Many of the ridiculously high prices that we are seeing now will seem like bargains by the end of the year. And right now the U.S. economy appears to be rapidly slowing down at the exact same moment that economies all over the globe are moving in the wrong direction. The CEO of Goldman Sachs just told us that “there’s going to be tougher economic times ahead” , and he is not exaggerating one bit.
