The Nigerian Navy (NN) last night confirmed the arrest of a Supertanker – MV HEROIC IDUN – by Equatorial Guinea forces over alleged crude oil theft in Nigeria. The Nation exclusively reported the arrest of the tanker by the Central African country after it fled from Nigeria’s AKPO Oil Field when its activities were uncovered by operatives of the NN. Confirming the arrest in a statement released yesterday, Naval Director of Information (DINFO) Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan said the feat was an indication of renewed collaboration between Gulf of Guinea (GoG) nations. He also confirmed that the Supertanker with International Maritime Organisation (IMO) number 9858058 raised a false alarm that it was under pirates’ attack when NNS GONGOLA, ordered the suspect vessel to sail to Bonny Fairway Buoy for interrogation. Ayo-Vaughan said the Regional Centre for Maritime Security for West Africa (CRESMAO), Abidjan, also confirmed that the vessel raised a false alarm about an attempted boarding between 10 to 15 Nautical Mile (NM) of Akpo oil field in Nigeria to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC) Zone E and other international platforms He said: “On Sunday 7, August 2022, personnel of the Nigerian Navy on routine patrol had observed and reported the suspicious presence of Motor Tanker (MT) HEROIC IDUN in Akpo Oil Field, Deep Offshore Bonny.

NIGERIA’S rich flora and fauna aquaculture have continued to translate to huge socioeconomic gains for the country, all thanks to the dexterity, commitment and patriotic zeal of the Nigerian Navy. Giving this commendation recently was a cross-section of experts while reflecting on the role of the Nigerian Navy since its inception. The occasion was at a public forum to commemorate Nigerian Navy’s 66th anniversary as custodians of the nation’s waterways. The event which was a weeklong celebration reflected both the outstanding revolutions witnessed by the service in the past 66 years and its leadership role in regional maritime security was heralded with an International Maritime Conference tagged: ‘Optimising Collaboration for Maritime Security and Socio-Economic Development in Africa’, a regional maritime exercise held in Onne, Rivers State. This was in addition to a cultural night, sports competitions (polo and golf), boat regatta, religious services as well as medical outreach. During the anniversary, and at the opening ceremony of the International Maritime Conference, President Muhammadu Buhari acknowledged the role of the Navy as the lead agency in the country’s maritime sector, saying that the establishment has developed into a big force to be reckoned with in the global naval community.
