Toyota Motor Corp. has decided to cease vehicle production at its lone car plant in Russia, a rare move for the company still manufacturing at sites in Japan dating back to its founding in the 1930s.
The automaker suspended operations at its plant in Saint Petersburg in March along with peers including Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co.
Toyota fully retained its workforce and kept the facility ready to restart production if circumstances allowed.
"After six months, we have not been able to resume normal activities and see no indication that we can restart in the future,” the company said in a statement.

TOKYO: Tokyo stocks opened lower Friday after Wall Street shares slumped, battered again by worrying economic data and concerns about the impact of further aggressive Federal Reserve action next week. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index was down 0.93 percent, or 258.60 points, at 27,617.31 in early trade, while the broader Topix index was down 0.59 percent, or 11.57 points, at 1,938.86. “Japanese shares are seen performing weakly, after US shares were dominated by sell-offs especially in technology shares” as US long-term yields continue to rise, Okasan Online Securities said in a note. Ahead of policy meetings by the US and Japanese central banks next week, “a wait-and-see attitude will likely grow,” the brokerage added. Market consensus is that the Fed will raise the benchmark lending rate by 75 basis points next week, though some analysts are floating the possibility of an even more aggressive step. Tokyo stocks close higher, extending US gains The Japanese central bank is highly likely to keep its current massive easing intact.

Honda Cars India has initiated a feasibility study on launching all-electric vehicles in the local market, as the automaker aims to move two-thirds of its portfolio to electrified vehicles by the end of the decade.Having received encouraging response for its hybrid City sedan, chief executive Takuya Tsumaru said the Indian unit of Toyota Motor was accelerating the launch of its cleaner vehicles in India. The feasibility study for all-electric vehicles, as well as flex-fuel options, is part of this effort, apart from seeking higher allocation of hybrids from the Japanese parent for the next financial year."Honda is also preparing (an EV) for launch in the future. We are studying about that. Anyway, it is good that Tata, Mahindra and other brands are now making it (EVs) more popular," Tsumaru told ET. "On the other side, you have seen the regulators'' position. They have a GST of 5% for EVs, 45% for normal passenger vehicles and 43% for hybrid," he added. While electrification of automobiles is picking up pace, the company believes that "strong hybrids" are currently the best bet for India as they are practical and worry-free given the state of charging infrastructure, the new head of Honda Cars India said."They offer better fuel economy and lesser emissions as compared to regular models.

Watch Video President Joe Biden, a gearhead with his own vintage Corvette, showcased his administration''s efforts to promote electric vehicles during a visit Wednesday to the Detroit auto show. President Biden traveled to the massive North American International Auto Show to plug the huge new climate, tax and health care law that offers tax incentives for buying electric vehicles. He toured a mix of American-manufactured hybrid, electric and combustion vehicles from Chevrolet, General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis on a closed-off convention center floor, and greeted union workers, CEOs, and local leaders. The Democratic president, who recently took a spin in his pine-green 1967 Stingray with Jay Leno for a segment on CNBC''s "Jay Leno''s Garage," hopped into the driver seat of a bright orange Chevrolet Corvette Z06 — not an EV —and fired up its engine, alongside GM CEO Mary Barra. "He says he''s driving home," she joked. President Biden then toured the new electric Ford Mustang Mach-E, marveling with Ford executive chairman Bill Ford at the model''s performance. "It''s amazing the speed," President Biden said, adding, "Does it have a launch button?" He also explored less-flashy vehicles, like Ford''s all-electric E-Transit van and F-150 truck.

The world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer is going electric. On Monday, Honda announced it would introduce “10 or more” electric motorcycles by 2025. The majority of those won’t be available in North America, with the automaker set to focus most of its attention on Asian and European markets. Don’t expect many performance models either. Honda shared a slide showing the silhouettes of 11 potential electric models, and all but four look like mopeds. The good news is that the remaining full-sized models are the ones that are likely to make their way stateside. Honda is developing a new “FUN” platform and plans to introduce three “large-size” EV models in Japan, the US and Europe between 2024 and 2025. It’s also working on a kids-sized bike based on the same powertrain and solid-state battery technology to power all of the models it plans to introduce before the second half of the decade. Honda At the same time, the company said it would continue to produce internal combustion engine models, but pledged to make them more environmentally friendly by introducing more “flex-fuel” motorcycles that can use E20 and E100 ethanol-based fuels in 2023 and 2025.

For the first time in eight years, the technology for automated vehicles "is no longer the bottleneck," Vogt said at the event, according to Bloomberg . Comparing All The Upcoming Electric Semi-Truck Models Electric semi trucks are coming, and they could help to decarbonize the shipping and logistics industry . However, range remains a major limitation. This presents challenges for long-hauling, where the average diesel-powered semi can travel up to 2,000 miles before refueling. Compare this to the longest range electric model, the Tesla Semi , which promises up to 500 miles. A key word here is “promises”—the Semi is still in development, and nothing has been proven yet. In this infographic, Visual Capitalist''s Marcus Lu and Zack Aboulazm have listed all of the upcoming electric semi trucks, complete with range and charge time estimates. Further in the article, we’ll explore the potential commercial use cases of this first generation of trucks. Model Overview The following table includes all of the models included in the above infographic. With the exception of Tesla’s Semi, all of these trucks are currently in operation or expected to begin delivering this year.

Wall Street Journal Samsung Comments On Chip Sales, Expects Ongoing Weakness To Over To 2023 Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (OTC: SSNLF ) sees the sharp downturn in chip sales extending into next year, marking a significant setback for the semiconductor industry reeling from a dramatic pullback in PCs, smartphones, and data servers’ sales. “The second half of this year looks bad, and as of now, next year doesn’t really seem to show a clear momentum for much improvement,” said Kyung Kye-hyun, who heads Samsung’s semiconductors unit and serves as the company’s co-CEO, at a media briefing at its new chip fab in Pyeongtaek. Despite the slowdown, Kye-hyun said Samsung would continue to expand its investment and R&D spending and exploit the downturn to capture more market share as it previously did.
