US Home Heating Costs Set To Surge 17%, Says Energy Group Authored by Bryan Jung via The Epoch Times, Winter is coming, and experts are predicting that it will be an expensive one for American households nationwide. The average U.S. household heating bill is expected to increase by 17.2 percent this winter compared to last year, according to a forecast by the National Energy Assistance Directors Association (NEADA). Families had already faced higher than average electric bills last winter due to inflation and this year provides no improvement. NEADA assists state agencies under the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, (LIHEAP) in distributing federal assistance to help low-income families pay their utility bills. The energy association expects that the average winter heating bill will increase from $1,025 to $1,202. Heating prices have risen over the past two years to more than 35 percent, the highest rate increase in more than 10 years, according to NEADA data. Lower-Income Households Will Struggle The total cost of heating would increase from $127.9 billion to an estimated $149.9 billion, with lower-income households facing the brunt of the burden. “The rise in home energy costs this winter will put millions of lower-income families [at] risk of falling behind on their energy bills and having no choice but to make difficult decisions between paying for food, medicine and rent,” said Mark Wolfe, executive director of NEADA. “As a result, NEADA sent a letter last week to the Congressional Leadership asking for a supplemental increase in LIHEAP of $5 billion to cover the higher cost of home heating and cooling as a result of [an] increased number of summer heat waves,” Wolfe added.

NORTHAMPTON, MA / ACCESSWIRE / September 28, 2022 / National Grid: This week, thousands of leaders are in New York for Climate Week 2022. While the presentations and networking are happening in New York City, the action is taking place to the east on Long Island. As more clean energy solutions like offshore wind, solar, battery storage, and clean hydrogen surface, Long Island is quickly emerging as a clean energy hub. Applying the solutions that are working here to other communities throughout the Northeast will be critical to mitigating climate change while continuing to provide reliable, affordable energy to residents that call this region home. The key to Long Island''s success as a clean energy hub is a hybrid approach to decarbonization that incorporates multiple sources of renewable electricity and heat. In Riverhead, the 23-megawatt Calverton Solar Energy Center powers more than 4,200 homes. This reduces carbon emissions 20,000 metric tons per year - equivalent to removing 4,000 cars from the road.

The workers of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) have threatened to resume their industrial action by shutting down the national power grid again. Recall that on August 17, many parts of the country experienced a total power outage as electricity workers led by Joe Ajaero downed tools over an industrial impasse about the promotion of senior officers, among other agitations. The striking union agreed to suspend the strike after a meeting with the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige. The stakeholders at the meeting agreed to set up a high-power delegation to look into issues brought up by the NUEE and report back within two weeks. The workers now issued another threat on Thursday, for shutting down the national power grid if the President Muhammadu Buhari regime fails to honour the agreement it made with the union. While Dukat Ayuba, the union’s zonal organising secretary, North-West, addressing journalists in Kaduna on Thursday said the two weeks ultimatum given to the federal government to resolve the crisis had elapsed.

As part of overall measures to address the load-shedding crisis, Eskom today launched three programs to get much-needed power to the national grid. Programs will initially focus on generators capable of supplying more than one megawatt to the grid. Over time, the threshold will be lowered to allow smaller producers to participate. The combined impact of the programs, which is projected to exceed 1,000 MW, will make a significant contribution to reducing the load shedding burden on consumers. The goal is to sign the first power supply agreement this week and for power to start flowing through the grid as soon as possible. These are: me. National Grid is taking blackout risk seriously, yet PM remains reluctant to take action to limit energy usage Alarms blare as a huge storm crashes in off the North Sea, taking out the St Fergus gas terminal in Aberdeenshire. A power failure renders the Hatfield Moor gas storage facility in Yorkshire useless. A foreign power attacks subsea power cables from Norway. Stay calm, it’s only a drill. These are the sorts of eventualities that the energy industry will simulate next week, as a routine annual emergency gas shortage drill takes on national significance. The length of the “Exercise Degree”, which is run by National Grid, has been doubled this year from two days to four days and takes place on 13-14 September and 4-5 October. It could not come at a more relevant time: debate is raging over how probable blackouts are this winter and whether Liz Truss’s energy bills freeze increases that probability because she has not encourage rationing. Experts in the electricity Industry have knocked the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) for shutting down the National Grid between 16-17 August to push for their demands at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) The decision of the union to deliberately shut down the national grid and even make viral videos while doing it is not only reckless but also a threat to national security and livelihoods, experts said. An expert on power infrastructure, Engr Oluwole Kayode, said no nation can allow such abuse of labour laws to happen without consequences, adding that the unions have chosen the wrong means of expressing their grievances. “What happened between Tuesday and Wednesday is unacceptable. The electricity workers union must change its ways and stay clear of tempering with crucial national infrastructure like the national grid from being used to labour politics,” he said Kayode also called on the Federal Government to prosecute all those found to have played a role in shutting down the national grid and make sure that they face justice through fair trial.
