WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department is expected to file a lawsuit against some of the largest poultry producers in the U.S. along with a proposed settlement seeking to end what it claims have been longstanding deceptive and abusive practices for workers. The suit is being filed in federal court in Maryland naming Cargill, Sanderson Farms and Wayne Farms, along with a data consulting company known as Weber, Meng, Sahl and Company, according to three people familiar with the matter. The people could not publicly discuss the specific details of the suit before the filing was made public and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. In its lawsuit, the Justice Department alleges the companies have been engaged in a multiyear conspiracy to exchange information about the wages and benefits of workers at poultry processing plants in order to drive down employee competition in the marketplace, the people said. The government contends the data consulting firm helped to share the information about the workers’ compensation with the companies and their executives, the people said.

What is a bear market? A bear market is defined as a decline by more than 20% off the market’s highs, indicating the momentum has shifted significantly to the downside. This is bad news broadly. But for investors who consider investing as a business rather than a way to gamble, plenty of options are still available. You could buy put options. Or you can find long-term stocks to buy, stocks that can perform well when the stock market is declining. Buying for the long term will make investing less stressful. Plus, remember that statistics are in favor of long-term rather than short-term, investing for generating profits. What stocks should you buy for the long-term in a bear market? Focus on defensive stocks from three core defensive sectors: utilities, consumer staples and healthcare. These seven stocks in this article are from these three sectors. They’re often expected to pay consistent dividends and all have stable earnings, regardless of the economic conditions. 7 Long-Term Stocks That Never Go Out of Style Here are seven investment ideas to add to your watchlist if you’re seeking long-term stocks to buy.

Sanderson Farms Inc. (NASDAQ: SAFM ), the nations third-largest poultry producer, is reportedly considering putting itself up for sale. Fowl Play: According to a Wall Street Journal report citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, the Laurel, Mississippi-based company is consulting with New York City financial planner Centerview Partners on a potential sale, with agricultural investment firm Continental Grain Co. identified as a potential suitor. The Journals coverage added that the talks may not result in a sale, although the report also speculated that a deal with Continental could result in combining Sanderson with Georgia-based Wayne Farms LLC , a poultry producer owned by Continental, that would result in a new entity producing roughly 15% of the countrys chicken meat. Sanderson rejected an unsolicited takeover bid from Durational Capital Management in October 2020, stating the offer was too low. See Full story available on Benzinga.com

The Gauteng government awaits the final decision on the scrapping of the controversial e-toll system. This follows a premature announcement by Gauteng Transport and Roads Infrastructure MEC Jacob Mamabolo on SAfm on Thursday that e-tolls would be scrapped. However, Mamabolo later issued a statement clarifying the issue and stating that his comments on the matter were distorted in the SAfm report, which construed him to mean that e-tolls had been scrapped. In the interview, Mamabolo was heard saying: Theyve been scrapped. The people of Gauteng should not be burdened with paying for national roads that serve all of us, that serve neighbouring states, that serve the whole economy of our country that is unfair to leave it to the people of Gauteng. Further elaborating on the comments he had made earlier, Mamabolo said the provincial government had been tasked with the e-toll matter with a view to opposing its implementation in the province. He added that the provincial government was now eagerly awaiting the announcement by the national government on the future of e-tolls.

Sanderson Farms on May 27 reported results for its second fiscal quarter and six months ended April 30, 2021.
→ Google Traductor
Sanderson Farms Inc. reported Thursday fiscal second-quarter profit and sales that rose above expectations, as improved poultry markets more than offset "significantly higher" feed grain costs. Net income for the quarter to April 30 rose to $96.9 million, or $4.34 a share, from $6.1 million, or 28 cents a share, in the year-ago period. The chicken producing, processing and distributing company said results included an income tax benefit of $37.4 million related to loss carry-back provisions allowed by the CARES Act. The FactSet consensus for net earnings per share was $3.20. Sales rose 34.2% to $1.13 billion, beating the FactSet consensus of $1.05 billion. Overall realized prices for chicken products increased 32.6%, while average feed costs per pound rose 26.6% and prices paid for corn and soybean meal grew 39.7% and 40.0%, respectively. "The improvement in the domestic poultry markets was driven largely by increased demand from food service customers, as U.S. consumers slowly returned to restaurants and several quick serve restaurant chains featured chicken sandwiches on their menus," said Chief Executive Joe Sanderson, Jr.
