Hi. Aaron Weinman here. BlackRock''s bullish stance on all things environmental, social, and governance has drawn criticism from a number of politicians, both conservative and progressive. Those on the left of the aisle argue the asset manager could do more to support a transition to a low-carbon economy, while conservatives reckon BlackRock''s position on the climate crisis ostracizes heavy-carbon emitting industries. BlackRock''s head of international and corporate strategy, Mark Wiedman, told a conference panel that helping finance the transition is an integral way to grow the firm''s private-equity unit, and by extension, its alternative-assets business. Before we get into that, however, it''s also time for our Banker of the Week! If this was forwarded to you, sign up here . Download Insider''s app here . 1. BlackRock is after new ways to finance the energy transition. Mark Wiedman, a top executive at the firm, said such an effort could bring together the firm''s private equity, infrastructure, and credit capabilities.

Earlier this week, the Dow Jones joined the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ in bear market territory. It marks the first time this year that the Dow has dipped below a 20% loss from peak – but it also marks a turning point in investor sentiment. A mood of doom and gloom is setting in. A change in times and a change in mood requires a change in outlook, a shift in perspective, for investors to succeed. With all three main indexes so far down, it’s clear that the last year’s modes of trading aren’t going to work in today’s conditions.

$43 Billion NYC Pension System "Reassess" Relationship With BlackRock Over ESG Backtracking New York City Comptroller Brad Lander outlined in a letter to BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, one of Wall Street''s biggest advocates for ESG, that he is becoming increasingly concerned the latest investment actions of the bank do not align with its climate commitments. Lander, which oversees NYC''s pension funds (Teachers'' Retirement System, New York City Employees'' Retirement System, and the Board of Education Retirement System), managing $43 billion of their investments, penned a letter to Fink on Wednesday about the firm''s "recent efforts to tout its investments in oil and gas in response to Republicans, who have criticized the firm for its advocacy of sustainable investing," according to Bloomberg . " BlackRock has repeatedly and rightly recognized climate change as an investment risk. In your 2020 letter to CEOs, you name climate change as a "defining factor in companies'' long-term prospects," and declared your "investment conviction that sustainability- and climate-integrated portfolios can provide better risk-adjusted returns to investors." Your 2021 letter to CEOs committed to "supporting the goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or sooner "—in line with BlackRock''s pledge as a signatory to the Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative (NZAMI)—and asked businesses to disclose how they are integrating their own net-zero plans into their long-term business strategies. " Unfortunately, despite these repeated proclamations , in its September 6 response to the attorneys general, BlackRock now abdicates responsibility for driving net zero alignment in its own portfolio by saying that it does not ask companies to set specific emissions targets , and that its participation in NZAMI does not mean BlackRock is setting or meeting any net zero targets .

Hi. I''m Aaron Weinman . Private credit is so hot, it was the talk of this week''s SALT hedge fund conference. Private credit is a pocket of the lending market that has grown to about $1.25 trillion in assets, according to Preqin data. Private-credit funds lend — typically to leveraged companies — for myriad reasons, from financing acquisitions to servicing borrowers'' working-capital requirements. In their infancy, these funds stepped in for regulated banks. They provided small loans (say between $50 million to $200 million) to riskier companies that banks avoided, and often negotiated extras in their credit agreements like seats on their boards. Private-credit funds plied their trade in the so-called middle market, and left banks to work on billion-dollar financings. Now, equipped with trillions of dollars in dry powder, private-credit is taking market share from big banks more than ever before. Let''s take a look at the opportunities — dissected by Insider''s Alyson Velati here — that private-credit giants like Owl Rock and Ares Management have found in this year''s choppy credit markets.

Blackrock is out with a great note today ( read it here ) that talks about the tradeoff between growth and inflation. They estimate it would take a deep recession in the US and 3 million job losses to bring inflation back to 2% quickly and it would be even worse in Europe. They say that it''s high time central bankers were upfront about it and debate the tradeoffs openly, write Jean Boivin and Alex Brazier. By focusing solely on the theoretical de-anchoring of inflation expectations and ignoring the very real growth costs, both the Fed and the ECB are swerving a crucial debate that needs to be had: where should policymakers land on the inflation/growth trade-off and what is the appropriate speed at which inflation should come back down to the 2% target? Instead, central bankers are increasingly relying on stringent, inflexible language in an effort (I think) to bluff on credibility while insisting there won''t be a hard landing. They argue that the right path for central banks is to reduce the hit to growth by taking longer to bring inflation back to target.

Hi. I''m Aaron Weinman . BlackRock has been slowly easing itself into the choppy seas of digital assets. BlackRock, alongside other investors, committed to a $400 million funding for fintech Circle, which issues a US dollar-pegged stablecoin known as USDC, in April. Shortly after that, Insider first reported that BlackRock would launch a blockchain- and crypto-themed exchange-traded fund. Then last month, BlackRock inked a partnership with Coinbase to connect clients on its Aladdin platform with crypto. Later in August, BlackRock announced it would launch a private trust to provide bitcoin exposure to its US institutional clients. All this activity comes amid a severe downturn in digital-asset prices, layoffs at Coinbase , and the possibility of new regulation from the US Securities and Exchange Commission. BlackRock, one could argue, has done a lot more than merely become exposed to crypto. In fact, it has amassed its own crypto crew, Insider''s Rebecca Ungarino reported here . Let''s take a look at 10 leaders shaping the firm''s crypto efforts.

Stocks were crushed Tuesday as the latest inflation update showed consumer prices remained elevated in August – dashing hopes that price pressures had peaked. Looking at the numbers, the Labor Department this morning said its consumer price index (CPI), which tracks what consumers are paying for goods and services, was up 8.3% year-over-year in August. While this was down from the annual increases seen in both June (+9.1%) and July (+8.5%), the core CPI, which excludes more volatile energy and food prices, was up 6.3% from the year-ago period – more than the 5.9% jump seen in each of the two prior months. And month-over-month, core CPI accelerated 0.6%, much quicker than July''s 0.3%. SEE MORE 16 Dividend Kings for Decades of Dividend Growth "Like the payroll report a couple of weeks ago, today''s CPI report showed that this year''s trends of persistent inflation and an excessively tight labor market are taking longer to move towards the Fed''s targeted levels than originally expected," says Rick Rieder, BlackRock''s chief investment officer of global fixed income.
