Canada’s national business paper, The Globe and Mail, recently interviewed a Toronto-based portfolio manager who seeks out smaller growth stocks with the potential to become large caps over the long haul. Alex Etsell invests $2.3 billion for Hillsdale Investment Management in microcap and small-cap strategies for the firm’s clients. He defines microcaps as stocks with market capitalizations between $100 million and $300 million, while small-caps are those between $300 million and $4 billion. In Etsell’s case, he’s investing in Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture Exchange stocks, but his philosophy can be applied to U.S. stocks. “We’re always looking to hold high-quality names, which in this market environment are companies that are growing and still showing profitability and have very strong margins. These factors are especially important in a high-inflation environment,” Etsell told The Globe and Mail on Jul. 23. Therefore, I have selected four small-cap stocks and three microcaps for this article using Estell’s size definitions.

Finding stocks that will survive high inflation is more complex than it seems. Prices of energy and basic materials — traditional inflation hedges — have fallen over concerns about sagging consumer demand. Retail investors rushing into companies like Indonesia Energy Corp ( INDO ) and Houston American Energy Corporation ( HUSA ) have seen their positions nearly wiped out. Meanwhile high-growth tech companies have fared no better. Firms from Expedia Group ( EXPE ) to Coinbase ( COIN ) are seeing share prices collapse as customers tighten belts and close their wallets this year. When inflation is paired with an economic slowdown, the resulting “stagflation” tends to hammer every industry. Yet, certain classes of stock tend to survive… and even thrive… from rising prices. Some of these firms benefit from higher demand.

(Thursday Market Open) The equity markets may take another hit today as JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM ) and Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS ) kicked off a new earnings season with a couple of misses as equity index futures pushed lower. Potential Market Movers JPM and MS missed on revenue and earnings estimates but JPM is down 3.27% in premarket trading against a 1.04% dip for MS. JPMorgan announced that it would suspend its stock buyback program to increase its loan loss reserves to ensure the company can navigate a potential recession. In fact, the move is due to growth in their loan business and not because they are expecting large losses. While JPM’s investment banking business saw a lot of weakness, they did see gains in their trading business. Morgan Stanley, which focuses more on capital markets and less on retail banking, reported a 55% year-over-year drop in revenue from its investment banking business as the number of merger and acquisition deals and equity and fixed income underwriting deals have plummeted.
"Watch For The Tipping Point": Bank Earnings To Give Key Insight Into Slowing Economy Now that the CPI shocker is in the history book, the market has the start of earnings season to look forward to and specifically the big banks starting tomorrow with JPM, Morgan Stanley and Friday when Wells, Citi, PNC and Blackrock all report. What to expect? According to JPM financial sector specialist James Goulbourne, the key cross-currents to keep an eye on are: strong loan growth and rates higher with consumer spending good; offset by markets, regulatory environment and rising loss reserves. Deposit betas have been low so far and loan growth has benefited from a more challenging market. That said, the last updates from large banks about consumer deposit balances were still positive with balances still well above pre-pandemic levels. The JPM analyst also points to near-term raised estimates given NIM and loan growth with volatility helping trading revenues; however, he concedes that the key concern is forward looking issues of recession and/or stagflation and fears Fed moves might lead to hard landing.

Is The Chinese Yuan Beginning To Chip Away At Dollar Dominance? Via SchiffGold.com, China appears to be chipping away at dollar dominance. While there is no indication that the dollar is in imminent danger of toppling from its perch as the global reserve currency, more central banks are warming up to the yuan. According to UBS Asset Management’s annual reserve manager survey, about 85% of central banks said they are invested in or are considering investing in the Chinese yuan. That’s up from 81% a year earlier. USB surveyed 30 top central banks. On average, central bank foreign exchange managers plan to hold about 5.8% of reserves in yuan within the next 10 years. That would represent a sharp increase from the 2.9% level of global reserve yuan holdings reported by the International Monetary Fund in late June. Meanwhile, the average share of US dollar holdings dropped to 63% as of June 2022, according to the survey. That was down from 69% in the previous year. According to Business Insider , the response to the invasion of Ukraine “has increased talk about a ‘multipolar’ world, in which the US is no longer the overwhelmingly dominant force.
Recently many traders have been wondering if Warren Buffett has lost his touch. His holding company, Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A , NYSE: BRK.B ), had seen its performance trail the stock market for an extended period as growth stocks soared while stodgier companies were left behind. For a time, it wasn’t clear what the best Warren Buffett stocks to buy were. In 2022, however, the tables have turned. Berkshire’s more defensive portfolio has held up well while large portions of the market have been pummeled. This has investors turning back to Berkshire’s approach to look for safe haven stock picks. 7 Cryptos to Watch as They Attempt to Break Out of Consolidation As of last quarter, Berkshire Hathaway’s investment portfolio included holdings in close to 50 different companies. Markets Turn Tail… Again When Once Upon a Time in America was released in 1984, the late Roger Ebert called it “an absolute masterwork of cinema.” The film would go on to win multiple awards and remains a fan favorite on my family’s movie list. There’s just one little problem: The full version is almost 4 hours long. As riveting as the “epic poem of violence and greed” can be, I often sit through the movie feeling as if it’ll never end. Investors watching the markets can relate. Last week, the S&P 500 recovered 6%, just to drop again this week. Short-term traders might call it a dead cat bounce while longer-term investors would call it a gratuitously long “masterwork” by the Fed. And we aren’t even at intermission yet. With interest rates still on track to rise at least another 150 basis points, investors need to switch tactics and buy stocks that benefit from rising rates.
